DIY Treatments For Your Hair That Will Not Break The Bank!

Just like our skin, hair can suffer from dryness and damage from exposure to the sun, swimming pool chlorine, or drying salt from the ocean. In winter, harsh winds and even the heater can suck moisture from the air - and our hair!

Whatever the cause - dried out hair is a nightmare. It causes frizz, breakage and lackluster locks. Those with naturally frizzy hair need to take extra care to keep your mane as moisturized as possible.

Everyone wants touchably soft tresses, so I have searched and found some easy DIY hair masks for parched hair. Quench those thirsty locks and give your hair the hydration it needs!

Bonus! While you wait for your hair mask to set, you can use some of these same ingredients to create a face mask and give yourself a spa day at home. Don’t forget to take a selfie!

Tropical Paradise Hair Masks

Give your locks a trip to paradise with these tropical escapes.

First try this: Coconut oil + aloe vera it is best for moisturizing, de-frizzing and healing. What you will need for the first one is take 5 tablespoons of coconut oil (best if warmed) and 3 tablespoons of aloe vera gel. (Best if you can get this straight from the plant but you can buy it in stores.), mix the coconut oil and aloe vera well. Next apply to hair from root to tip and wrap longer hair in a bun and put on a shower cap. Let it sit for 20 minutes. Optional: keep the oil warm by heating your hair with a dryer on low, or by sitting in the sunshine. Lastly wash out the mask with shampoo and conditioner, if needed. Then, enjoy your gorgeous hair!

Next we all know Aloe vera is one of the best ingredients you could use for repairing damage and dryness. It also boosts scalp health and encourages healthy hair growth. So another way to treat your hair using it is with 3 tbsp Yogurt 4 tbsp Aloe Vera 2 tbsp Carrier Oil (this can be olive oil or even grape seed oil) In a bowl, combine all the ingredients until you get a consistent mixture. Section your hair and start applying the hair pack from the roots of your hair to the tips. Leave the pack in for half an hour and then rinse it out with lukewarm water and shampoo. This pack works well for dry as well as combination hair types. It leaves your hair feeling soft, luscious, and healthy.

Now why honey you may ask, well Honey is a humectant, which means that it binds moisture to your hair shaft, keeping it conditioned. Now you don't always have to do a hair mask you can do a rinse with honey. You can dilute a teaspoon of honey with two cups of water and use it as a hair rinse. Just not everyday. Shampoo, Condition, Honey Rinse and then run cool water to remove any excess (we do not want to attract a swarm of bugs to your head now do we.)

Guacamole Dip Hair Mask

Here's how to repair damaged hair with a common fruit you most likely have in your kitchen. Your strands will be ready for a fiesta after this nutrient-rich treatment. What is it? Avocado + olive oil Best for: Moisturizing, de-frizzing and nourishing. What you need: 1 soft, ripe avocado, 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil (best if warmed) What to do: Remove pit and scoop out avocado. Mash, then whip with until completely creamy (use a fork or save your hand muscles by using a food processor, blender, or electric mixer if possible) Add in olive oil and blend well. Apply to hair from root to tip. Wrap longer hair in a bun and put on a shower cap. Let sit for 20 minutes. Optional: keep the oil warm by heating your hair with a dryer on low, or by sitting in the sunshine. Quick tip: use pre-mashed avocado if you want to skip steps one and two. Wash out with shampoo and conditioner, if needed. Then, enjoy your gorgeous hair!

Want another way to use Avocado?  Mash a ripe avocado (pit removed) with one egg, then apply this home remedy to wet hair. Avocados are rich in vitamins, essential fatty acids, and minerals that will help restore luster to your hair, says Stephen Sanna, expert colorist at the Pierre Michel Salon in New York City. Leave on for at least 20 minutes, then rinse several times. Repeat once a week for damaged hair and once a month for healthy hair.

But wait there is more ways to use Avocado!!! When it comes to sealing moisture in your hair, the efficiency of avocado can never be ignored. Bananas can increase the elasticity of your hair shafts and make them stronger and softer. You Will Need 1 ripe Banana 1 ripe Avocado Method Mash the banana and avocado together until the mixture is free of lumps. Apply the mixture to your hair and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. Wash off with cool/lukewarm water. Both these ingredients contain natural oils that condition your hair while nourishing your scalp and hair.

While we are on the subject of Bananas.....

Banana Milkshake Hair Mask

Give your mane a sweet treat packed with protein, potassium and natural oils. What is it? Bananas + milk or yogurt Best for: Moisturizing, intense de-frizzing and repairing damage.  What you need: 1 overripe banana - it’s much better to use one that is too ripe 2-3 tablespoons of milk or yogurt (depending on size of banana) What to do: Mash up banana completely. We highly recommend using a blender because any lumps will be very difficult to wash out. Add milk or yogurt and blend well. Apply to hair from root to tip. Wrap longer hair in a bun and put on a shower cap. Let sit for 20 minutes. Quick tip: use banana baby food if you want to skip the banana mashing. Wash out with shampoo and conditioner, if needed. Then, enjoy your gorgeous hair!

Now I have shown you a honey mask and then in some other masks I have mentioned egg as well as yogurt well here is one that combines all three for a great hair treat. Egg yolk is rich in fats and proteins and is also naturally moisturizing while the white contains the bacteria-eating enzymes that remove unwanted oils. It moisturizes dry and brittle hair. The protein content of yogurt will strengthen your hair strands from the roots and add extra shine, without removing its natural moisture. You Will Need 2 Eggs, 1 tbsp Honey, 2 tbsp Yogurt Method Beat two raw eggs in a medium-sized bowl. Add one tablespoon of honey and two tablespoons of yogurt. Mix until you get a smooth, creamy paste. Apply this mixture to your hair and leave it on for at least 20 minutes. Wash with cool water. This hair mask will leave your hair feeling conditioned without making it sticky. This is the perfect treatment for combination hair (oily at the roots, dry at the tips.)

Now for some more solutions that are a little more out of the box.

Mayonnaise Pack for those who want to condition the hair to make it smooth, soft, and manageable, mayonnaise could be the best ingredient to use. Mayonnaise contains L-cysteine, a powerful antioxidant that provides strength, shine, and volume to your hair. It is very beneficial for dry and damaged hair. You Will Need 1/2 cup full-fat mayonnaise. Method Whip the mayonnaise well until it is slightly fluffy. Wet your hair and apply it along the length of your hair, concentrating more on the damaged parts of your hair. Cover up your hair with a shower cap and keep for 30 minutes. Rinse with cold water and shampoo as usual. If you want an instant remedy that does not need much preparation, go for a full-fat mayonnaise massage. This dry hair treatment is highly recommended by hair stylists and can easily be done at home.

Beer Spray

Beer is known for its conditioning properties. It adds a healthy sheen to dry and dull hair and also provides volume. The vitamin B content in beer makes your hair lustrous and soft. You Will Need: 1/2 cup Flat Beer, 2 cups Water Method: Mix the beer with two cups of water and set it aside in a jug. Shampoo and condition your hair. Use the diluted beer as a final rinse to pour through your hair. Do not wash again and allow your hair to dry naturally. Using this beer rinse once a week will keep your hair conditioned and shiny.

Vinegar Wash The acidic nature of vinegar helps balance out the pH of the scalp, normalizing oil production. This is good for combination hair when used with a conditioning hair pack. You Will Need: 1 tbsp Vinegar Method: Use a conditioning hair pack and then rinse the pack out of your hair. In a bowl, dilute your shampoo and vinegar and use this to wash your hair. Let your hair air dry. This remedy helps tackle the oiliness at the roots of your hair while adding shine to the freshly conditioned hair shafts.

Another one is a way to repair damaged hair with apple cider vinegar (a must have in everyone's home). Put the life back into your limp or damaged hair with this terrific home remedy: combine 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar with 2 tablespoons olive oil and 3 egg whites, then rub the mix into your hair. Keep your hair covered for about a half hour using plastic wrap or a shower cap, then shampoo and rinse.

Also one last one. This one is very important! I always tell people they need to do a clarifying treatment to remove residue. Well here is one that you can do even if you have run out of clarifying shampoo.

Baking Soda Pack

Baking soda removes impurities and excess product build up in your hair. It closes the hair cuticles as it is alkaline in nature. Dry hair attracts a lot of dirt and a thorough cleansing is necessary to maintain its health. You Will Need: 1 teaspoon Baking Soda, 1/2 cup Water. Method: Combine the ingredients in a bowl and set it aside. Wash your hair and condition. Pour the diluted baking soda through your hair as a final rinse. Alternative Methods: Add the baking soda to your shampoo. Make a thick, smooth paste with baking soda and water and comb it through your hair, followed by a thorough rinse and wash.
Another way to use baking soda to treat dry hair is to substitute the water with an egg. Simply beat some baking soda into an egg and apply the mixture onto your hair. Leave it in for 15 minutes and then wash it out with a mild shampoo. Use baking soda once every month to clarify your hair. This remedy works especially well for people with combination hair.

Now I have given you all of my at home secrets......well may not all!!! Go Forth, Testeth these on your own hair! And remember if you are using egg Cool Water rinse, you do not want to cooketh thine egg and end up with a mess!
